Traveling to heal a Broken Heart

By Maggie Langeness Why do you travel? I have been asked this question many times, always giving the cliched response of ‘to explore’ or ‘learn new cultures,’ however the truthful answer is: I travel to heal a broken heart. My heart broke when two of my friends passed away in tragic accidents when they were just 20 years old. I didn’t know how to process this, so I acted out in pain. I didn’t know what grief was but I knew what anger was. I wanted everyone around me to feel the same heartbreak I felt so I started to fight people and if they didn’t want to fight me I would say very hurtful things in hopes they would feel the pain I felt. I thought the world was punishing me and I didn’t understand why this had to happen to MY friends! I thought if I screamed loud…

Meet weekly #TravelThrowback winner Alejandra, a nature lover and exchange student with inspiring travel stories

Weekly #TravelThrowback winner Alejandra is an exchange student from Spain currently living in Santiago, Chile. She told us about some of her favorite travel experiences and an inspiring women she met during her travels. “I like to meet people from the place… local people have all the secrets, you just have to listen to them!!! And I always do!!! :) I am a very sociable person and I love meeting people, and the truth is that usually I travel alone, then you force yourself to interact more with others. I have made great friends on every trip and thanks to the Internet, we keep in touch, the distance is not forgotten, I wish I could get them all together in the same place. Every trip is special, and there you meet many people that becomes relevant in your life. It is as if you were to have gone on that…

Culture Shock: From Third World kid to Silicon Valley founder

With the clock ticking and set to five minutes, Huong Tran, founder of Magpie, told three engaging stories about the culture shock she experienced when she first came to the United States from embargoed Vietnam. As part of “a fast-paced geek event” held by Ignite SF, Huong was invited to take over the stage to tell her tales Tuesday evening at Marines’ Memorial Theatre in San Francisco to a packed house. One slight twist, having 20 slides auto-advancing every 15 seconds, added to the excitement! Huong began by sharing that when she came from Vietnam eight years ago, she was the first Vietnamese student to attend Stanford business school since the war ended. And although she may seem like a confident female entrepreneur today, there were many lessons she learned along the way, among them, how to get better grades…

Meet weekly #TravelThrowback winner Wendy, a foodie, culture seeker and nature enthusiast who loves exploring new places!

Weekly #TravelThrowback winner Wendy loves getting outside of her comfort zone and exploring new cultures. She told us a bit about how she does this! “I travel to inspire my creativity. Putting myself in situations where I’m outside my comfort zone will always spur my soul. The ancient architecture of European countries and the vast blue of the Caribbean occupy my heart. The photos that stay with me are those that make up my memories. I am inspired by experiencing the local culture where ever I am visiting. I want the full flavor. I seek out food trucks, street vendors, galleries and museums, and public parks. I am a nature enthusiast and love to explore local landscapes including, Flora, Fauna and wildlife. Growing up in rural Appalachia somewhat limited my exposure to the world. I grew up in a safe , loving and conservative box. I always felt that I…

Meet weekly #TravelThrowback winner Joy, a traveler from Canada who loves spontaneity and food!

Weekly #TravelThrowback winner Joy told us all about her first solo trip, how liberating the experience was and what she brought home with her. “When I was travelling within Europe last summer I ended up travelling to Barcelona alone from Italy. I ended up going alone because I couldn’t find anyone to go there with (wish I knew about Magpie at the time!) but it turned out to be one of the best decisions in my life because travelling by yourself is so liberating. Not to mention because you are alone, it’s way easier for you to meet friends and integrate yourself into groups. Living in a really modern and hip hostel also really helped in making my trip the most memorable because I got to meet some really awesome people from all over the place! I was totally scared of travelling alone to a foreign country, especially when I…

Meet weekly #TravelThrowback winner Ashta, a traveler from India eager to discover the stories of new places

Weekly #TravelThrowback winner Ashta, from India, told us about her experience of traveling with her family, and the mother that inspired and motivated these adventures. “Traveling is not something that has started with me recently. I was always curious to read about places, know the lifestyle of people living there, history and thus to visit and see those places in this lifetime. We had our first trip with family when I was 8 and I still have all the memories fresh in my mind, thanks to my Mother who spotted my interest and asked me to write down the memoirs of each day in the diary, so that I have memories for the lifetime. Those trips with family every year, made the traveller inside me strong and the spirit to see the world stronger. Every place has a story to tell and I go out in search of those stories…

Meet weekly #TravelThrowback winner Kahlee, always up for new friendships

Weekly #TravelThrowback winner Kahlee told us about some of her most memorable trips! “One of my first solo trips, I backpacked through Thailand. I had a month to explore a country I had been dreaming of for years. I remember cockroaches the size of mice, bedbugs, and an angry staph infection; but I mostly remember about how amazing it was. I got dive certified, rode elephants, held monkeys, toured an island by moped, and pushed myself outside of my comfort zone. Another trip, some girlfriends and I spent a month on Oahu. While watching a football game at a local bar, we struck up a conversation with a man working laying telephone poles around the island. His team had access to a helicopter and offered to take the three of us flying around the island. The helicopter had no doors and the pilot was a bit of a daredevil. We…
